Our digital and physical worlds are converging
In new and exciting ways! Google has teamed up with Taito to launch an augmented reality version of the arcade classic, Space Invaders. This AR game, dubbed "Space Invaders: World Defense", is going to be powered by Google's ARCore and the recently announced Geospatial Creator, which means you'll be blasting aliens in your own neighborhood. The game appears to function like a shooting gallery where aliens pop up in and around real-world locations, and players aim to zap them out of the sky. Ready your blasters, folks! A Vision of the Future: The True Artificial Eye
Hold on to your monocles, folks! We're venturing into the realm of science fiction with the latest breakthrough in vision technology. The boffins at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have developed a new artificial eye that could give both androids and people with visual impairments a glimpse into the future1.
This isn't your grandpa's glass eye - this high-tech peeper mimics the human eye's structure, providing sensitivity to light and faster reaction times than its biological counterpart. Not only that, but the artificial eye registers changes in lighting quicker than human eyes, and sees dim light just as well.
Now, we're not talking superhuman sight... yet. While the artificial retina does contain about 46 times more light sensors per square centimeter than a real retina, there's still some fine-tuning to be done on the wiring. Currently, each wire is so big that it touches many sensors at once, limiting the resolution.
But don't worry, this isn't a case of the 'eyes' having it. Scientists are hopeful for future improvements, with thinner wires and more efficient manufacturing methods potentially leading to truly superhuman sight. Bings Brand New Upgrades
Have you ever felt stumped by search engines, wishing you could just have a chat with them instead? Bing is making that experience smoother than ever. The Bing team has taken on board user feedback and made some fascinating upgrades to their chat feature. For starters, it's streamlined the chat experience, capping it at 50 chat turns per day and 5 chat turns per session. This is to prevent the underlying chat model from becoming confused during long chat sessions. And don't worry, our data shows that most of you find your answers within five turns, and only about 1% of chat conversations extend beyond 50 messages.
But that's not all. Bing has gone ahead and made your chat experience more visual. Now, if you ask about flamingos, an image of the bird will pop up right in your chat responses. Click on the image, and voila! You'll get to explore more information about their habitat, diet, lifecycle, and other facts. This visual enhancement is not just for flamingos and capybaras but extends to a wide range of topics.
Bing's updates also span across shopping, weather, finance, and autos, optimizing answers with better-designed visual elements for a more comprehensive response. Plus, the copy-paste experience has been improved, especially when the chat generates blocks of formatted text or code. You'll now see a separate copy button for easier transfer of information.
And when it comes to writing or copying your prompts into Bing chat, you can now include formatting like paragraphs, bullets, or numbering, because who doesn't love a well-structured query?. So, next time you're Bing-ing away, remember, it's not just a search engine, it's your chat partner too!
